Head of Strategic Assortment Management (f/m/d)

Job description

At zooplus we strive to fulfill pets and pet parents' needs in the areas of pet food and accessories in the best way possible. The team of Strategic Assortment Management is the focal point for assortment-related projects and initiatives and thus is responsible for creating and optimizing the best possible customer offer for the business. As Head of Strategic Assortment Management, you will report to the Head of Strategic Pricing and Central Sales and lead a small team of currently 2 Senior Assortment Managers. You and your team are responsible for the strategical and operational optimization and development of zooplus’ assortment in accordance with customer needs, market trends, and strategic goals.


You will take responsibility for, contribute to, and coordinate all activities and responsibilities in the area of Strategic Assortment Management. These include:

Assortment analysis & definition of the optimal assortment:

  • Development of zooplus’ assortment analysis KPIs and tools
  • Analysis of the assortment in all required dimensions such as customers, product groups, manufacturers, brands, shops/countries, and brand/private label
  • Reporting to measure the efficiency and success of the assortment
  • Understanding assortment needs through integrating external data and trends, performing market and competitor analysis, drawing conclusions for zooplus assortment

Assortment implementation (organizational, processes & systems):

  • Execution and management of the optimum category/ product assortment to deliver against the agreed targets   
  • Coordination of various stakeholder assortment objectives in close cooperation with sales and vendor management
  • Definition and implementation of the operational assortment processes including listing and delisting
  • Development and discussion of specific assortment improvement initiatives
  • Execution of planning processes and break down of targets and budgets

You thrive in an entrepreneurial setting and are constantly looking for opportunities to develop the assortment. Furthermore, you should have the following qualifications:

  • a University degree in a relevant field such as management or mathematics
  • experience in category/ assortment management of at least 6 to 8 years
  • Experience in managing teams and projects
  • Solid analytical skills coupled with a passion for numbers and large amounts of data, as well as the ability to derive pragmatic business decisions
  • Good knowledge of statistical methods 
  • Thorough understanding of and interest in the FMCG and retailing sector
  • High degree of responsibility and independent working
  • Strong communication skills and fluent proficiency in spoken and written English, ability to understand/ speak basic German is a plus
